McGillin's Olde Ale House
Neighborhood bars in Philadelphia
McGillin's Olde Ale House has operated on the same block off Sansom Street in Center City since 1860, making it the city's oldest continuously running tavern. The ground floor keeps its long wooden bar and dense wall of historic photographs and memorabilia, while the second floor is set aside specifically for private functions. That upstairs room is booked for office parties, birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties, and holiday parties, with tiered per-person packages that include a hot and cold buffet, a set open bar window, and an optional DJ. Booking a private event requires a minimum group size of 50 guests on weekdays or 60 on Friday and Saturday, with a nonrefundable deposit to hold the date. The tavern is a short walk from Rittenhouse Square and City Hall, and it remains a working neighborhood bar on the ground floor even while the private room operates upstairs for scheduled events.
