Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Museums in Philadelphia

·2027 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19130, USA

Eastern State Penitentiary is a former prison, opened in 1829 and closed in 1971, that now operates as a National Historic Landmark museum in the Fairmount neighborhood. Its central rotunda, where seven original cellblocks radiate outward, is available for private site rentals booked directly through the historic site's own rental program. Because the building is preserved as a stabilized ruin, it has no permanent climate control, though temporary climate control can be added for a fee, and outdoor tenting is arranged through a named partner vendor. Rentals are limited to corporate functions and private gatherings for groups that already exist, and the site does not rent to the public for weddings, proms, dance parties, or concerts, and generally only takes rental bookings in the warmer months. The crumbling stone cellblocks, guard towers, and exposed cell interiors give the site a look found nowhere else in the city, and it remains open daily for public tours alongside its rental program.
